Venice Entrance Fee Could Rise to €30 from 2027

The entrance fee for Venice could rise to as much as €30. This was explained by Michele Zuin, the City of Venice's Budget Assessor, as reported by Il Gazzettino, stating that after three years of experimentation the measure should assume "an increasingly stable structure."

Why Raise the Price

According to Zuin, the request for a "heavier" contribution does not stem from a desire to increase revenue, but from the need to make it truly effective: "The current €5-10 fee is now affordable for everyone; the risk is that it won't have the deterrent effect that this measure should have." The assessor recalled that in the past figures as high as €50 had been discussed, but the most concrete hypothesis at the moment stands at €30. The objective, he clarified, is to discourage day-trippers and those who have already visited Venice multiple times, pushing them to choose "a day trip elsewhere" on the most critical days.

The final figure, Zuin emphasized, will not be decided unilaterally by the City but together with the government and Parliament. In this regard the assessor cited as a positive signal the visit on September 11 by Tourism Minister Gianmarco Mazzi to the Lido, on the occasion of the presentation of works at the Des Bains hotel: although the ticket issue was not directly addressed, the minister's presence would testify according to Zuin to a "harmony" with Mayor Simone Venturini.

More Days Requiring Payment?

Also under consideration is the possibility of expanding the period in which the contribution is required, so far limited from April to July. A request that came, Zuin explains, also from hotel owners: the extension of the requirement to March and September is being evaluated. "Everything must be done without harming our facilities and businesses, the right balance must be found," the assessor said, recalling that more days requiring the contribution also mean more costs for stewards, control personnel and municipal police. For now, he clarified, "we have not yet decided."

Higher Overnight Tourist Tax

Zuin linked the issue to the resources needed for the #EnjoyRespect Venezia campaign and for managing tourist flows, which in his view "must be done and paid for with resources that should not depend on Venice residents and workers, but from taxes derived from tourism itself." With this in mind the City is also evaluating an increase in the overnight tourist tax, with a proposal of a maximum €8-9 for five-star hotels, to align with other major Italian cities. According to the assessor, the meeting with hotel owners on this point did not provoke protests: "No one complained," he said, adding that tourism "must exist" but needs to be managed to make the city "more liveable" for those who live there.
