Naples Opens Restored Last Supper to Public at Liceo Vittorio Emanuele II

A sixteenth-century fresco, recently restored, returns to public view inside a historic high school in Naples. As reported by Il Mattino, on Saturday, October 3rd it will be possible to visit The Last Supper housed at Liceo Vittorio Emanuele II-Garibaldi, the oldest classical high school in Southern Italy.

Where and when

The extraordinary opening concerns the classroom that houses the work, accessible from 12:00 to 16:30. The building is located on via San Sebastiano, in the heart of the historic center of Naples.

A refectory turned into a classroom

The fresco is painted on one of the back walls of what was once the Refectory of the convent complex of Dominican nuns dedicated to Saints Peter and Sebastian, today home to the high school. The scene, Il Mattino explains, develops across multiple perspective planes, with complex theatrical architecture that also involves the fourteenth-century cross vaults of the space.

The history of the building

The structure, founded in 1300, has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries, preserving within it other historical testimonies such as the Ancient Physics Cabinet and the Natural History Museum. The school principal, Professor Stefania Colicelli, emphasized how the high school, beyond being a place of education, has over the years qualified itself for the conservation and enhancement of architectural, artistic, historical and scientific heritage, today offering an unprecedented perspective on the urban evolution of the historic center of Naples.
