Giro di Campania Returns After 20 Years: From Caserta to Piazza Plebiscito

After more than twenty years of absence, the Giro di Campania has returned to race on the region's roads. The 64th edition of the race started this morning at 10 o'clock from the Royal Palace of Caserta, as reported by Il Mattino, with a symbolic start in the presence of regional councilor Zabatta. Before the official start, which was then given in Maddaloni, a minute of silence was observed for Sandro Mazzola.

A 193 km route through five provinces

The race crosses all five Campania provinces for a total of approximately 193 kilometers. The route touches, among others, the municipalities of Arpaia, Montesarchio, Benevento, Avellino and Montoro, then descends to the Amalfi Coast from Vietri to Amalfi, passing through Furore and Agerola. From there the caravan heads down to the plain touching Castellammare di Stabia, Pompei, Torre del Greco, Ercolano and Portici, until reaching the port of Naples.

Finish at Piazza Plebiscito

The finish line is set at Piazza del Plebiscito, the same location already used for a Giro d'Italia finish in May, according to Il Mattino.

Who is racing

More than one hundred athletes are competing, divided into 18 teams in the WorldTour, Professional and Continental categories, for a race organized by Terenzi Sport Event and included in the Challenge of the Italian Cycling Regions Cup. Among the participants are three Campania cyclists: the Casertans Michele Pascarella and Ivan Toselli, and the Neapolitan Giuseppe Sciarra. Dario Nicoletti, today sports director of Biesse Carrera Premac and winner of the race in 1991 in Caserta, has highlighted Leonardo Vesco, who won last year in Maiori in the Under 23 event of the Giro di Campania.
