America's Cup, Technical Trials Begin in Naples: Calendar Through July 2027
First boats expected for training in the gulf, while bases take shape at Bagnoli and Nisida. Here are all the stages leading to the 38th America's Cup
The countdown to the America's Cup in Naples has officially begun. As reported by Il Mattino, the totem installed in Piazza Vittoria now marks the days remaining until the major sailing event, while the city hosts the first technical trials of the competing teams' boats.
In the coming months the Gulf of Naples will become a stage for training and preparations: the teams' logistics bases will be built at Bagnoli and Nisida, ahead of a sequence of races that will run from the Louis Vuitton Cup through to the actual challenge for the 38th America's Cup.
Two Different Boats
One of the most visible innovations concerns the boats. The September races were contested with AC40s, one-design hulls of approximately 12 meters, identical for all teams. But the real competition will be fought over AC75s, foiling monohulls of approximately 23 meters, larger and more powerful, designed specifically for the America's Cup. According to Il Mattino, the French La Roche Posay team will begin training in the coming days, followed shortly by the English. All other teams will arrive in 2027.
The Racing Calendar
The first competitive event is scheduled for May 22, 2027 with the Louis Vuitton Cup Stage 1, six fleet races with all AC75s in the water simultaneously: a format never before seen in the history of the Cup. This will be followed by three Louis Vuitton Cup Round Robins between late May and mid-June, with 21 match races each, and from June 2-6 the Youth America's Cup on AC40s.
After the Round Robins, the top three Challengers will advance directly to the semifinals, while the other three will compete for the final spot on June 12 and 13. The Louis Vuitton Cup semifinals will take place from June 16-20, the final from June 26 to July 4. Before the decisive challenge, from July 5-9, space will be given to the Women's America's Cup.
The Final Challenge
The highlight will arrive on July 10, 2027 with the start of the America's Cup Match between the Defender and the Challenger emerging from the Louis Vuitton Cup: the first team to reach seven victories will win, with races scheduled through July 19.
